Notes about Radiowaves

You already know I love physics. I spend 1/3 of every workday thinking about some branch of physics. Wired and Wireless networking is built on these principles of physics and how do radio waves interact. So my love for networking crosses paths with my love for semi-trucks and trucking.

Citizen Band Radio (CB)

CB Radios operate at 27 MHz in the High Frequency Band. The wave is 11 meters tall. 102” is 1/4th a full wave-length. 4-watts is the maximum legal output for a CB radio. Prior to 2021, all CB radios were based on AM technology. Modern radios can operate in AM and FM modes. FM offers higher audio quality over a shorter distance thanks to the increased bandwidth. There are 40 channels available to CB Radio users.

Family Radio Service - FRS

FRS radios operate using FM technology at either 462 MHz or 467 MHz depending on the selected channel. These frequencies reside in the (UHF) Ultra-High Frequency Band. FRS radios are limited to 2-watts of power. FRS waves are approximately 65 centimeters (25.2 inches). 16 centimeters (6.3 inches) is 1/4th a full wave-length. There are 22 channels available to FRS radio users.

General Radio Mobility Service - GRMS

GRMS radios operate using FM technology at either 462 MHz or 467 MHz depending on the selected channel. These frequencies reside in the (UHF) Ultra-High Frequency Band. GRMS radios are limited to 4-watts of power. GRMS waves are approximately 65 centimeters (25.2 inches). 16 centimeters (6.3 inches) is 1/4th a full wave-length. There are 22 channels available to GRMS radio users.
